UAMS Regional Programs sponsors two preceptorship programs for students in good standing in the UAMS College of Medicine. The Family Medicine Preceptorship is open to both M1 and M2 students. Entering Juniors may choose a 2-, 3-, or 4-week preceptorship. The Family Medicine Preceptorship for entering Sophomores is 4-weeks in length. During the Family Medicine Preceptorship, students have the opportunity to observe and become part of all aspects of a private practice of a family physician in a community setting. To help students gain a better understanding of the specialty of family medicine and the health problems of the community, students will reflect on their experiences through a specially created wiki. Students receive a stipend of $400/week to cover expenses. The Family Medicine Preceptorship may be scheduled in any Arkansas county except Pulaski.
The 8-week Service Learning Preceptorship is open to M1 students. Students may schedule the preceptorship from the end of classes in May through the end of July. During the Service Learning Preceptorships, the students will combine clinical experience with a family physician with a service project that will provide the student with the opportunity to learn while impacting the medical or health-related issues of the community. A stipend of $400/week is provided to cover expenses. Weekly themes will be incorporated into the preceptorship to allow students to record their activities and reflect on their experiences. Any rural community (<15,000) or the site of a UAMS Regional Center may serve as a location for the Service Learning Preceptorship.
M1 and M2 students may also choose to serve as Assistant Directors for a M*A*S*H or CHAMPS summer Program. For more information or if you have questions about the Family Medicine or Service Learning Preceptorship Programs or M*A*S*H or CHAMPS Assistant Director Program, please contact the Regional Programs Office by email or at 501-686-5260.
