The UAMS AHEC sponsors community-based family medicine residency programs in 6 of the 8 regions across Arkansas.  The residency programs help to achieve the AHEC mission of improving the supply and distribution of family physicians throughout the state. Each year, the AHEC Residencies provided training for 148 Family Medicine residents, with 45 graduates completing a 3-year AHEC residency to become board eligible in Family Medicine. AHEC trained family physicians comprise 46% of all the family physicians in the state and 50% of the family physicians in rural counties.
