Breast health education and screening program
The breast health education and screening program educates men and women on the importance of early detection of breast cancer through monthly self-exams and mammograms. Breast screening mammography and diagnostic services are available to individuals who qualify. Funding is provided by the Texarkana Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. CPR 
UAMS AHEC Southwest offers the American Heart Association’s Heartsaver AED and Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers CPR training. Classes are scheduled as needed and can be offered in the community for churches, schools and non-profit organizations. Cost is $40.00 per person. Community Health Worker training
Community Health Workers (CHWs) are active and trusted members of their own communities. They serve as lay health advisors, navigators, and information holders to help their neighbors and community. Understanding what the needs and difficulties of their communities are, as well as what the medical profession can offer their communities, the CHWs bridge this gap. UAMS AHEC Southwest is working to develop a two-tier CHW training program in collaboration with UAMS Regional Programs. For more information about CHW training, e-mail Gary D. Miller.   

Diabetes Education
The UAMS Family Medical Center provides one-on-one and group diabetic education. Diabetic education support groups are held each week. In addition, community presentations are available on diabetes care and management. For more information about the diabetic education program, e-mail Rhonda Wright.  

Health Education 
Education is key to providing individuals with quality health information. We are are available to give presentations to churches, civic groups, non-profit agencies, businesses, and schools. Our program topics are geared toward the audience, including cholesterol, healthy eating, high blood pressure prevention/management, physical activity, and more. Kids for Health
The state-recognized Kids for Health© curriculum is available for schools in the community. KFH integrates wellness into key subject areas within the core school curriculum. In addition to the wellness topics presented, a health care professional talks about his/her role in the health care setting. This allows students to learn about the multiple jobs available in health care. For more information on the Kids for Health program, please contact Kandis Wilborn.  

Safety Baby Showers 
Shower participants will learn how to keep their babies safe at home and on the go, covering such topics as home safety, safe sleep for infants, Shaken Baby Syndrome, and child passenger safety. Participants receive a small bag of safety items including smoke alarm, electric outlet covers and Shaken Baby Syndrome video. Tobacco Prevention and Education
The Breathe Easy ArkTex (BEAT) Tobacco Control Coalition currently serves communities in Little River, Hempstead, Howard, and Miller Counties in southwest Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas. Currently, BEAT operates as a substance abuse sub-committee of the local Hometown Health coalitions in these four Arkansas coalition counties. The primary goals and objectives of this project include bringing more youth into the coalition to become change agents, increase the amount of tobacco-free policies for businesses, educate communities on the benefits of tobacco-free parks and recreation areas (playgrounds and sports fields), replacing tobacco advertisement with tobacco use-related warnings and increasing the physician referrals to the SOS Quitline. One of the most important calls a tobacco user can make is to the Arkansas Tobacco Quitline at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669). It is confidential, and it is free. Youth Leadership Development
The Special Prevention Unit (SPU) was established to as a way to help youth become leaders and advocates in their schools and communities. SPU is a unique group of young people who have dedicated their time and energy on learning the skills needed to be the leaders to evoke positive change with their peers, school, and community. Students involved in SPU strive to make a difference in our communities by promoting positive decision making. Through communication and dedication we will keep students aware of choices related to drug and alcohol use, sexual activity, safety issues, and other challenges youth may face.
