For students in Arkansas, learning about health care careers and pursuing a goal of being a health care provider isn’t as hard as it sounds. UAMS Regional Programs provides several avenues to help students, from junior high and high school through college and medical school, learn about the health care field and develop the talents and knowledge necessary to succeed.
To help students learn about the health care field, UAMS Regional Programs provides the Arkansas Health Careers web site to allow students to explore the opportunities. When students spend time at the site, they can discover a health care career that interests them.
The Arkansas Health Careers site also serves as a resource to connect interested students with educators and health care professionals around the state. This gives students the chance to get “hands on” experience and learn more about health care professions.
Junior High and High School
For junior high students, we offer a one week day program called CHAMPS (Community Health Applied in Medical Public Service). For senior high school students, the M*A*S*H (Medical Application of Science for Health) two week program allows students to spend time at Area Health Education Centers (AHECs) and community hospitals around the state. Our pre-professional health recruiters provide a number of programs and information about health careers for students of all ages.
Undergraduate Students
UAMS Regional Programs also provides support for students currently enrolled in college. This includes providing resources to help students interested in medical school to take practice MCAT exams, practice interviews and schedule pre-med clinical training rotations. UAMS Regional Programs also help coordinate mentoring and “student shadowing” opportunities to help students learn more about health career fields. Contact the health career recruiter in your region for more information. Through the AHEC Programs, students have access to UAMS degree programs. Visit the website of the College of Nursing or College of Health Related Professions to learn of the courses of study offered through the AHEC.
Residents and Medical Students
Finally, for students currently in medical school, UAMS Regional Programs, through the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC) Program, provides preceptorships and clinical rotations along with residency training at the AHEC Clinics and at other sites around the state. The AHEC Family Medicine Residency Programs are community-based programs providing training under the supervision of board certified specialty and sub-specialty physicians and AHEC faculty members.
